The Hellenic society for Infant Mental Health in cooperation with the Brazelton Centre UK, carried out in January 2018, a certified training to the NBAS.
The Greek Society for the Mental Health of Infants has implemented the action “The Art of Maternity” as part of the “Open School” Program of the Municipality of Athens, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation being the exclusive donor. Two cycles of experiential workshops (October – November 2017 and March – April 2017) took place for pregnant women, mothers or women who want to have a child, with the aim of clarifying fundamental issues such as the desire for childbearing, pregnancy as a chance of changing and restarting, the characteristics of good maternal and paternal functions, the psychosomatic state of infants, the meeting point of Psychoanalysis & Neuroscience, etc.
Through the themes that were developed, the psychoanalytic look offered to maternal art a dynamic unique – almost magical – and a possibility of repairing past trauma. The group reflected in both the continuous turn out of participants and in the positive final evaluation of this action the quality of the meetings and similarly, in the voicing of the request for the continuation of the group with the same composition, with the added presence of their husbands.
The heritage of these meetings is the clarification of fundamental issues in the beginning of mental life, the cognizance of the good practices that mothers already implement with their babies, but they needed to “validate”, the need for getting rid of the guilt. The team co-created and co-constructed something of their own at these meetings and provided food for thought and reverie to the participants as another maternal function.
